Choc Full Events Calendar

Pete Bailey just sent through details or two more events at the LDMFA field in October, a Scale and Pylon day. Have a look at the events calendar for not only LDMFA events, but also those from the VMAA calendar. Click through to October and you’ll see every weekend there’s something on around the state to keep you busy.
Don’t forget you can follow the instructions here and receive email / SMS reminders of events on the calendar even including the monthly club meeting.

AGM 2010 – So much to see and do

So much going on in such a short time! We had the regular monthly meeting before getting into the AGM where Tony Loyd-Bailey was re-elected as president. Congratulations to Tony. The contact details will be updated soon to reflect the changes in committee.

Ron Schultz was selling tickets to support the 2010 AOCC F3A team compete in the Phillipines this year. If you missed your chance to chance to buy tickets but would like to, an email to teammanager@rcflyer.com.au should sort you out.

A number of awards were made including Robert Gray for most improved flyer, Ray Chivers for clubman of the year, Jake Thornton for a special effort in Heli flying and a number of lifetime memberships.

The prize for the regular raffle was an eflite Blade MCX RTF Heli which Robert Gray was lucky enough to win. Robert had a pretty good night! Remember, the raffle is a regular event at the club meeting so don’t forget to clean out the centre console of change and buy tickets. Gotta be in it to win it.

There were two models for sale including an electric biplane that was snapped up before the meeting even finished! James Hurley had his electric pylon up for sale. We also had a presentation of rubber powered and Cox engine powered models.

The monthly meetings are a great chance to see some show ‘n tell, buy / sell a model and maybe win a prize. Hope to see you there next month, Wednesday 4th August.

A Trip Down YouTube Lane

It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube when you put your mind to waste some time and just start following links from one video to the next. I was doing just that when I came across a video that had a funny looking VTOL contraption struggling to get off the ground. I quickly recognised the background scenery as the LDMFA field and was pretty sure I recognised the voice behind the camera.

From Brian Evans;

“Yes that’s my voice and I think that I was the one behind the camera. The film was taken at Lilydale in the mid 90’s. the pilot and designer of the plane was Don Incol and at one time we had a rivalry as to who could design and build the most unusual planes. The other person inspecting the bits after the crash is Doug Cole who we don’t see much of these days either, but I think he at least is still a member. I think that I may have the original film somewhere as well as some photo’s of Dons other projects. One of them was a semi scale Lockheed Salmon tail sitter and that one worked quite well and was sold as a kit. I will look for the film and photo’s and writes a spiel about it”

Podcasts: A wealth of information

If you haven’t browsed the iTunes store yet, you’re missing out on weekly updates from the world of RC news. Have a look at some of the podcasts available on RC in the “Podcasts Audio” section, under “Games and Hobbies” you’ll find an “Aviation” section that has quite a few podcasts on full size and RC planes. A few noteworthy podcasts on RC include;

TheCrashCast

All Things That Fly

RC Flightcast

RC Radio Network

These particular podcasts are usually updated weekly and although most come out of the US, they’re full of great information, resources, tips & tricks. One of our members got a mention on The Crash Cast this week when his 800mAh battery shorted out on a pen clip, he took a photo and suggested a tip for isolating the leads on a multi-lead charging harness. Download the podcast here and have a listen. It’s important to remember you don’t need an iPod or iPhone to enjoy the content in iTunes, much of which is completely free. Once you’ve subscribed to a podcast, the iTunes software can be set to automatically download any new episodes and keep you up to date in what’s happening in the world of RC. I hookup my iPod to my docking station speakers out in the garage, what better to have playing in the background than people talking RC!

The great thing about weekly updated shows is they often have an accompanying website where the presenters will post links to photos, videos or other websites they’ve discussed during the show. So if you find a topic particularly interesting, you can follow it up with further research on the Net after you’ve finished listening. Two good examples of this are;

http://allthingsthatfly.com/

http://thecrashcast.com/

There’s podcasts dedicated to planes, helis, cars, vendors, electrics, nitro…… have a look, you’re sure to find something worth a listen.

Pylon Practise at Bendigo

Take a minute to watch this footage of Rick , Tom and Igor (all Lilydale members) practicing pylon at Bendigo club the Sunday before last in very windy conditions.
We will be representing the club this week end at A.M.P.R.A and my father will be taking some good film equipment and put together a film of our members.
Cheers Rick Townsend
**Note – Head over to the Events Calendar to see what’s on this weekend. It’s looking busy with Pylon, Pattern and Scale events all in one weekend!

Frequent club frequencies.

“The attached spreadsheet contains a graph showing how many radios we have on each frequency. This is based on data provided by members in the annual membership renewal forms.
I used to produce this periodically when I was the Registrar. It was a guide for members having frequency clashes who wanted to move to another frequency.
Regards, Terry Pollock”

This is great information and confirms something I’ve always suspected, some factory in China made a huge batch of 637 crystals and sent ‘em over here.
Is your frequency a popular one? How often do you experience a clash? Having recently started using 2.4 as well as 637 I appreciate the ability to get more flights in on 2.4 rather than joining the queue on the 36MHz band.
At this years Joe Nall event held recently in the US, the rules were modified such that only 2.4GHz radios were allowed AND only those at the flightline were to be switched on. This may be partly due to some interference and lockouts noted at the Southeast Electric Flight Festival held a few weeks before Joe Nall.
